The band originally consisted of <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Michael+Stipe\" class=\"bbcode_artist\">Michael Stipe</a> (vocals), <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Peter+Buck\" class=\"bbcode_artist\">Peter Buck</a> (guitar, mandolin), <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Mike+Mills\" class=\"bbcode_artist\">Mike Mills</a> (bass, keyboards, vocals) and  <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Bill+Berry\" class=\"bbcode_artist\">Bill Berry</a> (drums). Berry retired from the band in October 1997 after having suffered a brain aneurysm on the '95 Monster tour. He is now a farmer.
