Initially linked in with <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/tag/neo-psychedelia\" class=\"bbcode_tag\" rel=\"tag\">neo-psychedelia</a> acts of the period, their music later became largely defined by the interplay of guitarists <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Marty+Willson-Piper\" class=\"bbcode_artist\">Marty Willson-Piper</a> and <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Peter+Koppes\" class=\"bbcode_artist\">Peter Koppes</a> coupled with the abstract lyrics of bassist/singer <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Steve+Kilbey\" class=\"bbcode_artist\">Steve Kilbey</a>. Their debut album, <a title=\"The Church - Of Skins And Heart\" href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Church/Of+Skins+And+Heart\" class=\"bbcode_album\">Of Skins And Heart</a> (1981), earned them their first radio hit &quot;<a title=\"The Church &ndash; The Unguarded Moment\" href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Church/_/The+Unguarded+Moment\" class=\"bbcode_track\">The Unguarded Moment</a>&quot;. They were originally signed to EMI's <a href=\"http://www.parlophone.co.uk/newsite/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Parlophone </a>label, but record company dissatisfaction led to them being dropped overseas, which limited their exposure early on.
