The group was founded by bassist <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Alan+Lancaster\" class=\"bbcode_artist\">Alan Lancaster</a> and guitarist <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Francis+Rossi\" class=\"bbcode_artist\">Francis Rossi</a> in 1962.  They began as a rock and roll <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/tag/freakbeat\" class=\"bbcode_tag\" rel=\"tag\">freakbeat</a> band called The Spectres. By 1967, with very little commercial success, they discovered <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/tag/psychedelia\" class=\"bbcode_tag\" rel=\"tag\">psychedelia</a> and changed their name to Traffic (later Traffic Jam, to avoid confusion with Steve Winwood's Traffic.)
