They have a strong following, essentially inventing <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/tag/celtic%20punk\" class=\"bbcode_tag\" rel=\"tag\">celtic punk</a> and having a large influence on the larger <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/tag/celtic%20fusion\" class=\"bbcode_tag\" rel=\"tag\">celtic fusion</a> scene as well. The Pogues were founded in King's Cross, a district in north London, in 1982 as <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Pogue+Mahone\" class=\"bbcode_artist\">Pogue Mahone</a> — &quot;pogue mahone&quot; being the Anglicisation of the Irish póg mo thóin, meaning &quot;kiss my arse.&quot; The band specialized in Irish <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/tag/folk\" class=\"bbcode_tag\" rel=\"tag\">folk</a> music, often playing with the energy of the <a href=\"http://www.last.fm/tag/punk%20rock\" class=\"bbcode_tag\" rel=\"tag\">punk rock</a> scene from which several of the members had their roots.
