[G]The Youngstown tabernacle stood [C]amongst some giant oak [G]trees
Just outside of Youngstown in eastern [D7]Tennessee
The [G]bell would toll each Sunday for the [C]Youngstown folks to come
The man who made the church bell ring was [D7]tabernacle [G]Tom

The Youngstown people said old Tom was [C]touched in his [G]mind
He mowed the lawn and cleaned the church and never charged a [D7]dime
They [G]said he was a lonely man no [C]friend or kin or [G]wife
And to serve Gods tabernacle was his [D7]only aim in [G]life

But ol' tabernacle Tom had a [C]song to [G]sing
Ol' tabernacle Tom had a bell to [D7]ring
[G]Tabernacle Tom had a [C]job to be [G]done
Thank God the world's been blessed with men like [D7]tabernacle [G]Tom

One day the news like wild fire went [C]racing through [G]Youngstown
They said ol' crazy Tom had burned the tabernacle [D7]down
So the [G]sheriff went and got him and [C]took him off to [G]jail
The Youngstown Christian Soldiers said ol' [D7]Tom was bound for [G]hell

Sunday morning found the heavens filled with [C]dark and churning [G]clouds
By church time it was raining hard and the wind was howling [D7]loud
They [G]still talk about the twister that missed [C]Youngstown, Ten[G]nessee
And the burned out tabernacle crushed [D7]beneath the giant oak [G]tree

But ol' tabernacle Tom had a [C]song to [G]sing
Ol' tabernacle Tom had a bell to [D7]ring
[G]Tabernacle Tom had a [C]job to be [G]done
Thank God the world's been blessed with men like [D7]tabernacle [G]Tom

The Youngstown congregation went and g[C]ot Tom out of j[G]ail
They asked him if he had a vision but he wouldn't [D7]tell
Now [G]if this legend has a lesson then [C]I'll take the [G]stand
That each man has a purpose in the [D7]Masters master [G]plan

But ol' tabernacle Tom had a [C]song to [G]sing
Ol' tabernacle Tom had a bell to [D7]ring
[G]Tabernacle Tom had a [C]job to be [G]done
