[C]In Cumberland Kentucky on a [Am]cool autumn evening
[C]Billy lay in [F]love with Mari[C]anne
She was rich judge's daughter [Am]he was a son of a [C]miner
But that [D7]night their love was more than they could [G7]stand

[C]The judge said to his daughter that [Am]son of that coal miner
[C]Is someone you'd do [F]well to leave [C]alone
[F]She knew her dad so [G7]well she [C]knew she couldn't [F]tell
But the [C]truth was bound to [F]show before too [C]long
Their love had started [F]growing on its [C]own

You can't out run the [G7]long arm of the [F]law
No you [C]can't out run the [G7]long arm of the [C]law

Billy placed his hand on Mary and he [Am]felt the baby's moving
[C]Kissed her and said I'll [F]see you when I [C]can
The judge had made a promise when [Am]he caught up with [C]Billy
He'd [D7]send him far away from Mari[G7]anne

[C]The whole town knew he'd do it to [Am]many times he'd proved it
[C]To at least a hundred [F]men behind the [C]wall
[F]He'd smiled behind that [G7]frown and [C]when he brought that gavel [F]down
He [C]called himself the [F]long arm of the [C]law
And he'd set his mind on [G7]seeing Billy [C]fall

In a hot humid mine shack a [Am]mid-wife pulled the sheet back
[C]And placed a cool damp [F]towel on Mari[C]anne
Billy's eyes were wide with wonder from [Am]the spell he was [C]under
When [D7]she placed the new born baby in his [G7]hands

[C]He didn't hear the siren [Am]just a baby's crying
[C]That miracle of [F]love was all he [C]saw
[F]When the door came crashing [G7]down and [C]Billy turned a[F]round
He [C]felt the heart and [F]soul inside him [C]fall
He stood face to face with the [G7]long arm of the [C]law

You can't out run the [G7]long arm of the [F]law
No you [C]can't out run the [G7]long arm of the [C]law
You [F]can hide out for a [G7]while he [C]says with a [F]smile
But you [C]can't out run the [G7]long arm of the [C]law

Seemed like everybody down in [Am]Cumberland Kentucky
[C]Came out that day to [F]see poor Billy's [C]trial
The court was called to order there [Am]sat the judge's [C]daughter
She [D7]looked so proud holding Billy's [G7]child

[C]When they brought Billy to him the [Am]judge just looked right through him
[C]As he held that holy [F]bible in his [C]hand
And [F]he smiled at his [G7]grandson then [C]his eyes cut back to [F]Billy
And [C]said I think this time the [F]law will under[C]stand
Son I sentence you to [G7]life with Mari[C]anne

You can't out run the [G7]long arm of the [F]law
No you [C]can't out run the [G7]long arm of the [C]law
[F]He said to Billy with a [G7]smile I [C]know you hid out for a [F]while
Ah but you [C]can't out run the [G7]long arm of the [C]law
No you can't out run the [G7]long arm of the [C]law

He'd smiled behind that frown and when he brought that gavel down
He called himself the long arm of the law
And he'd set his mind on seeing Billy fall

In a hot humid mine shack a mid-wife pulled the sheet back
And placed a cool damp towel on Marianne

And said I think this time the law will understand
Son I sentence you to life with Marianne

You can't out run the long arm of the law
No you can't out run the long arm of the law
He said to Billy with a smile I know you hid out for a while
Ah but you can't out run the long arm of the law
No you can't out run the long arm of the law
