Strange Charm

Song Author Hank Green Submitted by: Anonymous
A qu[C]ark is a fundamental c[C]onstituent of m[F]atter
[G]Observed in 1968 through [F]deep electric sc[C]atter
We [C]found that protons were more co[F]mplex than we thought
We [G]thought they were solid particles but [F]they are no[C]t
[C]Protons in fact are made up of three separate[F] pieces
It just g[G]ets more confusing as our k[F]nowledge i[C]ncreases
And t[C]hat is what a quark is; it’s a piece of [F]a proton
And they al[G]so make up other things in[F]cluding the neu[C]tron
[C]Up down strange charm t[F]op bottom
If you d[G]on’t know what a quark is it doesn’t mat[F]ter, you still got [C]em
And with le[C]ptons and bosons unless something[F]’s amiss
They make up e[G]verything that we can see and th[F]at we know ex[C]ists
[C]Things made up of quarks including pr[C]otons and neutr[F]ons
[G]Are composite particles that physicist call ha[F]drons [C]
[C]Many times those hadrons are theoretically desc[F]ribed
[G]But most exist for only very br[F]ief amounts o[C]f time
[C]Quarks have electric charge, colour c[C]harge, mass and s[F]pin
And ha[G]ving colour charge means they exist so[F]lely in[C] side
[C]Other kinds of particles that cannot exist a[F]lone
Which is w[G]hy quarks have never been st[F]udied on their o[C]wn
[C]Up down strange charm t[F]op bottom
If you [G]don’t know what a quark is it doesn’t mat[F]ter, you still got [C]em
And with l[C]eptons and bosons unless something[F]’s amiss
They make up e[G]verything that we can see and th[F]at we know ex[C]ists
These t[C]iny bits of matter are part of al[C]most everyth[F]ing
There i[G]s no unified theory to ma[F]ke it less confu[C]sing
But the fa[C]ct that we’ve identified that th[C]ey exist at all[F]
Is so[G] remarkable that I am cons[F]tantly in a[C]we
[C]Up down strange charm t[F]op bottom
If you do[G]n’t know what a quark is it doesn’t mat[F]ter, you still got [C]em
And with lep[C]tons and bosons unless something[F]’s amiss
They make up ev[G]erything that we can see and [F]that we know ex[C]ists

A quark is a fundamental constituent of matter
Observed in 1968 through deep electric scatter
We found that protons were more complex than we thought
We thought they were solid particles but they are not
Protons in fact are made up of three separate pieces
It just gets more confusing as our knowledge increases
And that is what a quark is; it’s a piece of a proton
And they also make up other things including the neutron
Up down strange charm top bottom
If you don’t know what a quark is it doesn’t matter, you still got em
And with leptons and bosons unless something’s amiss
They make up everything that we can see and that we know exists
Things made up of quarks including protons and neutrons
Are composite particles that physicist call hadrons
Many times those hadrons are theoretically described
But most exist for only very brief amounts of time
Quarks have electric charge, colour charge, mass and spin
And having colour charge means they exist solely in side
Other kinds of particles that cannot exist alone
Which is why quarks have never been studied on their own
Up down strange charm top bottom
If you don’t know what a quark is it doesn’t matter, you still got em
And with leptons and bosons unless something’s amiss
They make up everything that we can see and that we know exists
These tiny bits of matter are part of almost everything
There is no unified theory to make it less confusing
But the fact that we’ve identified that they exist at all
Is so remarkable that I am constantly in awe
Up down strange charm top bottom
If you don’t know what a quark is it doesn’t matter, you still got em
And with leptons and bosons unless something’s amiss
They make up everything that we can see and that we know exists
